CHICAGO — Palatine-based Township High School District 211 has become a flash point recently in the fight to protect the civil rights of transgender students. That’s why the Equality Illinois PAC (EI PAC) believes it is important to weigh in on the school board election there with the endorsements of three candidates: Anna Klimkowicz, Robert LeFevre, and Edward Yung.
These candidates are being challenged by opponents who want to rescind the district’s policy that affirms transgender students and who are affiliated with an anti-LGBTQ extremist organization.
The EI PAC, the statewide LGBTQ political action committee, announced the endorsements in advance of the April 4 school board election. District 211 is the largest high school district in Illinois and includes Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Palatine, and Schaumburg.
“We are proud to endorse Anna Klimkowicz, Robert LeFevre, and Edward Yung in District 211,” said Nicole Bashor, Chair of the EI PAC. “Schools should be environments where students can be who they truly are and thrive. Yet, anti-LGBTQ organizations are using our schools in their mean-spirited effort to allow discrimination against transgender students. We should not let these groups pick on transgender students with bad policy. Klimkowicz, LeFevre, and Yung will stand up for all students.”
The school board election is being contested by a slate of candidates backed by Parents for Privacy, which seeks to repeal a district policy that affirms transgender students. Parents for Privacy is allied with the Alliance Defending Freedom, an Arizona-based legal advocacy organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center recently called an anti-LGBTQ extremist organization.
The EI PAC is the only statewide political entity dedicated to defending and securing the rights of LGBTQ Illinoisans through engagement in the electoral process. Endorsements are based on a candidate’s record in office, responses submitted on the EI PAC’s 2017 candidate survey, and consultation with stakeholders in District 211.
