Transgender Day of Remembrance events around the state


CHICAGO — Transgender Day of Remembrance is on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Communities across Illinois will be holding events in honor of the day.

We’ve put together a list of events throughout Illinois. We’ve also included some events close to Illinois regions.

Central Illinois

Trans Day of Remembrance


Join IWU Pride Alliance and the BN Trans Community to respect and remember the lives of the trans people murdered for their identity within the last year.

Phoenix Center Transgender Day of Remembrance


Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is a day to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and acts to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. This event will feature speakers and the reading of the names of those killed in the US in the past year. The event will be held in the MT Vann Room at The Phoenix Center and doors will open at 5:30.


Transgender Day of Remembrance – Candlelight Vigil


Peoria Transgender Society, Peoria Proud, and the Central Illinois Interfaith Alliance, with help from the Universalist Unitarian Church will memorialize those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender fear, bigotry, and hatred. This event raises awareness, educates the community, and honors those whose lives were ended tragically by violent acts of those who knew or perceived them to be transgender. Please join us for this solemn evening of fellowship.



Trans Day of Remembrance Dinner & Vigil


Join us as we celebrate the lives of trans siblings we have lost with community speakers and a candle light vigil. Dinner will be provided. Event organized by the Howard Brown Trans and Gender Nonconforming Health Team and the V.O.I.C.E.S. Project.


Transgender Day of Remembrance


Center on Halsted’s annual event to honor the memory of trans persons who have been murdered in the U.S. during this year. We invite the trans community to come together, to remember those who have passed, and to encourage/support each other as we move forward together.


Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony with CTC


We will have speakers, performances, a brief ceremony, and refreshments. This event is free and open to the public and taking place in the second floor loft space of the Galleria. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible, there are 6 steps from the second floor to the second floor loft space. If you can’t attend but would still follow the ceremony, the Chicago Theological Seminary will broadcast it live at their YouTube channel.


Buffalo Grove

Transgender Day of Remembrance NWI

Portage, Ind.

The memorial vigil for our transgender sisters and brothers around the world who were murdered in 2018 will be held at Metropolitan Community Church Illiana at 5579 Clem Road, Portage, IN. Everyone is invited to this time of remembrance and healing. In our call to justice we create a place for healing the scars of violence still in our societies. This event is open to all in our community.


Trans Day Of Remembrance Shabbat


Our service will feature a reading of names (that we know) of those trans people who have been killed as result of transphobia, as well as prayers and liturgies that celebrate trans experiences in Judaism and in the world, with participation from our LGBTQ Havurah, our Gender Inclusion Task Force, and members of JRC who identify as trans or nonbinary.

St. Louis

STL LGBTQIA+ Community join our Trans Community as we come together for healing and remembrance of those siblings we have lost to fatal violence, not only in 2018 but previous years as well. As we come together in community, voices of trans individuals will be heard in speech and in song. Join us at the Transgender Memorial Garden, a place of unity and tranquility to reflect and honor those lost.


Northern Illinois

Transgender Day of Remembrance at NIU


Please join the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center and campus and community partners as we remember those who are no longer with us. This event includes a candlelight vigil and reading of the names, followed by a community solidarity space. Together, we will recognize what challenges the transgender community faces and remember those lost. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a call to action after the vigil.

Please join us in remembering those who lost their lives. We will gather at 6:00 p.m.. The vigil will begin at 6:30 p.m.. All are invited to stay afterwards for a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to pass.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil


Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on November 20th to memorialize the lives of transgender people that have been lost due to transphobic violence in 2018. To honor this day, the Saluki Rainbow Network will be hosting a candlelight vigil a week beforehand on November 13th, as November 20th is during our fall break.

To mourn, celebrate, and shine light on transgender lives taken too soon. Included activities include speakers, and information inside (closed to the media for privacy purposes), and a candlelight vigil/walk to the Haynies Corner fountain for a moment of silence and solidarity amongst all walks, and rolls, of the community.
