Queering Faith 2 with The Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder on Feb. 2

CHAMPAIGN — UCC Campus Ministry is bringing back “Queering Faith” to Community UCC on Feb. 2 with Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder.

From their Facebook event:

Queering Faith is BACK! This year, we are thrilled welcome Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, Sr. Pastor of City of Refuge UCC and Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries.

Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder, a San Francisco native, has served her call through prophetic action and ministry for justice for over thirty years. This call to “blend proclamation, worship, service and advocacy on behalf of those most marginalized in church and in society” led to the founding of the City of Refuge United Church of Christ in 1991. In 2003, Rev. Dr. Flunder was named consecrated Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, a multi-denominational coalition of over 100 primarily African American Christian leaders and laity. Rev. Dr. Flunder is on the Board of Starr King School for the Ministry and DEMOS and has taught at many theological schools. She is a graduate of the Certificate of Ministry and Master of Arts programs at PSR, and received her Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary. She is also an award winning gospel music artist and author of Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology of Homiletic and Radical Inclusion. She has served as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

About City of Refuge, Dr. Flunder says, “Trying to establish a relationship with a God that barely tolerates you, but cannot truly accept and certainly will never celebrate you, can do incredible damage to one’s self esteem. The tortured historical and theological view that suggests that some people are just flawed or born to be the underclass and should never expect to be on God’s ‘A’ list, has been the convenient method used to hold women, immigrants, the poor and LGBT people in chains of self-depreciation. We all need community. When access to existing communities is not available, marginalized people must seek to develop community for and among themselves.”

A dynamic and lauded preacher and teacher, Rev. Dr. Flunder will take us to church! You will leave inspired and knowing you are loved.

The Queering Faith series explores the relationship between faith and LGBTQ+ identity and practice. Engaging the body, asking the questions, and coming together as community to think beyond the binary of Queer Vs. Faith… and into the beauty of queering our own faith. We’ll use art, story, and theology to engage the community. We can’t wait to do this with Bishop Flunder. Save the date. Bring your friends.

Queering Faith 2.0 is brought to you by UCC Campus Ministry – UIUC, and a generous grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, as well as these local community partners: Community UCC, Champaign, IL, Illini Hillel at Cohen Center For Jewish Life, Planned Parenthood of Illinois, The UP Center of Champaign County, University YMCA – UIUC, and the Unitarian Church of Urbana.

Community UCC is at 805 S. 6th St. in Champaign. The event starts at 7:30 p.m.
