CARBONDALE — The Big Muddy Film Festival at Southern Illinois University is now accepting submissions for it’s 42nd annual event in 2020.

The Big Muddy is a student-run film festival that has been going on at SIU since 1979 to encourage film making of all kinds.

The festival takes place annually at the end of February or beginning of March in Carbondale. Films featured represent all genres and lengths and are submitted from all corners of the globe. Big Muddy has served as a platform to celebrate and showcase innovative, diverse, and culturally important independent cinema in the Southern Illinois region.

A panel of local activists awards The John Michaels Memorial Film Award, which honors films as activism that address themes of peace, justice, community action, human rights, and environmental conservation. Also awarded is the Mike Covell Award, named after the man who helped found the Big Muddy, honoring film created in the southern Illinois region. Cash prizes are awarded to the best of competition in each category.

The festival is looking for submissions of any style, length, content, and genre. It’s organized into the categories of experimental, narrative, documentary, and animation.

Submission formats are DVD/Blu-Ray, .MOV Quicktime, or online screeners. They’ll need disc or .MOV for the festival screening.

Each work submitted should be accompanied by an entry form and fee. Please submit only one film for each entry form, and include only one film per screener DVD. Multiple submissions are welcome. If you wish to submit more than one film, please use separate entry forms and screener DVDs. Works must be in English or with English subtitles. All films should be completed after J. Works that had been previously submitted to The Big Muddy Film Festival are not eligible.

The early bird deadline is June 27, regular deadline is July 27 and late submission ends on Aug. 20. Those accepted will be notified on Dec. 7, 2019.

For details on the categories and submission, and to submit online, go to the Big Muddy’s FilmFreeway page.
