CHICAGO — Drag performer GiGi Mayonaé died this past weekend following a serious car accident with a drunk driver.

CWBChicago reported on Saturday that Mayonaé‘s car was hit head on while she was driving down Halsted in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood early Thursday morning. The website reported that the other driver, Gerrick Birt, 29, was charged Friday with felony DUI causing an accident with bodily harm, two counts of misdemeanor DUI and traffic violations, including failure to have insurance. He reportedly had a blood alcohol level of .253, almost three times the legal limit.

CWBChicago and Chicago.GoPride both reported that as of Saturday, Mayonaé was still posting on social media, saying she would be having surgery for her pelvis, which was fractured in the accident.

GoPride reported that Mayonaé died at 1:50 p.m. on Sunday. An autopsy is still pending. Friends were expressing their loss and grief on Mayonaé‘s Facebook page.

A memorial performance is set for tonight at Jackhammer in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Chicago’s Best Worst Drag Show will have a show on Monday with no contest and all money raised will go to her family to help with arrangements and any other donations are appreciated. Those who would like to perform a number in Gigi’s memory are invited to attend. Sign-ups start at midnight, show starts at 2 am.

A GoFundMe to pay for expenses is also in the works.

Another fundraiser will be held in Indianapolis on July 30 at the Black Circle Brewing Co. Money from the regular Drag Bingo event will go to Mayonaé‘s family.
