BELOIT, Wisc. — Rock the Pride 2019, Beloit’s Pride celebration, will be at the city’s Telfer Park on Saturday, Aug. 24.
The Beloit Daily News reported that the event will be held from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and is hosted by Yellow Brick Road.
From the Beloit Daily News:
The fun kicks off at 10 a.m. with a vendor market that runs until 6 p.m. There also will be a nondenominational prayer at 9:45 a.m., followed by a speakers rally featuring local and state officials around noon.
Yellow Brick Road co-founder and board member Marilyn Schuh said the Rock County Pride Pageant is back once again and is even bigger this year. In addition to the Mrs and Mr categories, there will be a gender-neutral Mx category as well. Schuh said this is part of an effort to be more inclusive to the transgender and gender non-conforming community. The three categories contestants will be judged in include a talent portion, a stage question (asking participants why they would be the best representative of Rock the Pride) and who has the best financial representation (or who earns the most tips).
Yellow Brick Road secretary Murray Mueller said participants can simply show up on that day to register. Mueller just asks to either bring any music on a USB stick or to email Yellow Brick Road ahead of time. The pageant will kick off around 1 p.m., followed by live music around 2 p.m. and Drag Queen Races around 3 p.m.
The races – which are hosted by Southerland Pride, a group that has hosted a private LGBTQ pride event for more than 20 years in Janesville – have competitors put on a pair of shoes, a wig, a dress, etc. at each station. The first person to cross the finish line in full drag wins.
Live music will resume around 4 p.m., which will include local band Kat and the Hurricane that will perform at 5 p.m. The band also performed at Summerfest and Milwaukee Pride this year.
The event is kid friendly with a kid’s schedule being announced in the coming weeks.
