URBANA — A University of Illinois student has been arrested and charged with a hate crime in connection with a noose found in a university dorm over the weekend.
WILL, an NPR station in Champaign/Urbana, reported that Andrew Smith has been arrested in connection with a noose found in an elevator at Allen Hall in Urbana early Sunday morning.
In a statement the campus police sent to the radio station, they said they spoke with Smith at his residence hall and identified him as the offender. He was arrested on Monday morning.
Student groups Black Students for Revolution and Black United Front have said they were disappointed about the delay in informing the community of the incident and are calling on the UI administration to react more quickly to incident, inform people quicker and have harsher punishments for perpetrator, according to WILL. The university’s student government is supporting the groups’ demands.
The radio station reported that Smith was due to be arraigned on Tuesday afternoon in Champaign County Circuit Court.
