CHICAGO — Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has endorsed Marie Newman against incumbent Dan Lipinski in the Illinois 3rd Congressional district.
News of the endorsement came through the Justice Democrats, a group promote progressive Democratic candidates for office. In they past, they’ve supported politicians like representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.)
“We are so proud that Jessica Cisneros for Congress and Marie Newman are being endorsed by Elizabeth Warren, a strong fighter for working families,” the Justice Democrats said on their post. “At a time when the DCCC is rallying around pro-NRA and anti-choice Democrats like Cuellar and Lipinski, it’s a breath of fresh air to have candidates for president who remember what the Democratic Party should stand for.”
“Honored to receive the endorsement of Elizabeth Warren, who has dedicated her career to fighting for workers and working families,” Newman said on her own Facebook page. “We need a real leader in #IL03—and in the White House—who will put workers, our climate, and the health of our people above everything else. “
Lipinski has long been considered one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, having in the past voted against pro-choice and marriage equality legislation.
