Lincoln Presidential Library to host forum on trans Civil War veteran


SPRINGFIELD — The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will host a forum on Albert Cashier, a transgender man who served in the Union Army during the Civil War on Thursday, March 12.

Discover the fascinating story of Albert Cashier. Born as Jennie Hodgers, Cashier took on the identity of a man before the Civil War. When war broke out, Cashier volunteered for the Union Army and served three years.That was followed by decades of living and working as a man.

Learn about Cashier’s time in the Army and how his gender identity impacted his life afterward. Suggested reading: “They Fought Like Demons” by Deanne Blanton and Lauren M. Cook.

This meeting of the Illinois History Forum takes place at noon in the library building, 112 N. Sixth Street, Springfield. It is free, and participants are welcome to bring their lunch.

The forum starts at noon. The library is at 212 N. 6th St. in Springfield.
