Updates on impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ

CHICAGO — The impact on LGBTQ organizations and events continued on Thursday night.

The 2020 Wisconsin LGBTQ Summit, set for March 28 in Milwaukee, has been cancelled. Fair Wisconsin and Diverse and Reliant, the LGBTQ groups that were organizing the event, made the announcement on Thursday. They said that the state of Wisconsin was asking for the cancellation or postponement of any non-essential gathering more than 250 people. Refunds are available by emailing [email protected].

PFLAG Galesburg in northern Illinois has suspended all in-person meetings and is cancelling their March educational session.

Metro Trans Umbrella Group in St. Louis announced that they are postponing their “Transcending the Spectrum 7” art exhibition, originally set for May 2. The event will now be on August 22 with the deadline for submissions on July 19. Those interested can read the rules and fill out the submission form here.

The Rainbow Cafe LGBT Youth Center in Carbondale has set up a Discord group to allow clients to chat and keep in touch while the center is closed. From their Facebook announcement:

Because our youth hours are closed on Friday, March 13, 2020, our former manager and current board member, Otis James Duncan has worked with the youth to develop a Rainbow Cafe Community night online! This will happen during our regular hours of 6-10 p.m.|

We are using Discord, which is kind of a mix of a chat room and a discussion board. We have different channels, some are text and some are voice. We have set up voice and text chats based on each of the rooms of RC.

Different areas will feature:
General Chat
A movie
Discussion of what we want these nights to look like
Just hanging out

Because we are cancelling / rescheduling our other groups and events over the next week or two, this is open to all of the Rainbow Cafe community, including Transitions, Trans-Formation, Unconditional and ARC. New folx are welcome to join the fun!

Please email the Illinois Eagle at [email protected] if you know of other facilities or events that are postponing, closing or cancelling because of COVID-19.
