ELGIN — ELGbtq announced on Thursday that the 2020 Elgin Pride Parade and Festival would be pushed back to 2021.
The event was planned for June 6.
From their Facebook post:
It is with great sadness that we have made the decision to postpone our 2020 Elgin Pride Parade and festival–which was originally set for June 6th 2020– to June 2021. After much discussion among committee members and local community leaders, we have come to the conclusion that it is better to err on the side of caution rather than risk exposing our community to COVID 19. With the uncertainty that is part of our daily lives right now, it is hard to predict whether everything will be back to “normal” by early June, and we also feel the economic impact on our local businesses and supporters.
We are so thankful for all the support we’ve received in the past year since we initially began planning. This is a heartbreaking decision to have to make for all of us, as we have put in a ton of work and we know everyone was really excited for this. However, we fully intend to come back even bigger and stronger next year! We may still carry on some smaller gatherings in June, but we are playing everything by ear until all this settles down.
If you were signed up to be a vendor or parade group, we have sent an email with instructions.
We’re trying to look on the bright side, that this gives our planning team more time to help get the word out and truly create a huge, magical event next year.
We sincerely hope this message finds you well, and we are happy to answer any and all questions.
This would have been Elgin’s first Pride celebration.
