CARBONDALE — Like other areas across Illinois, Southern Illinois is adapting to coronavirus by holding a Pride drive. Their’s is called Drive Thru PRIDE March.
From the Facebook event page:
Although we can’t gather in person this year for our annual PRIDE march, we can still commemorate and raise visibility by taking to the streets to show our PRIDE. We also take this opportunity to honor BIPOC individuals and communities and demonstrate our solidarity.
On Sunday, June 28th beginning at 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm, we invite all LGBTQ+ family, allies, and supporting organizations to join us in this drive by celebration. Decorate your cars; bring out your signs; don your PRIDE gear and wear your masks. Our procession will begin on the Strip in Carbondale by the Gaia House, proceed North on Hwy 51 North, turn left onto Rt. 13, then left onto HWY 51 South, ending by the Island. Feel free to drive the loop of the strip as many times as you’d like between 12-1 pm. Take it slowly, as we will be taking videos and pictures.
The Varsity Center is our host point and will livestream the event as we drive past. We will be led by Southern Il Pride Queen Blanche DuBois, Southern Il Pride King Faim Lee Jewls, Mr. Southern Il Pride Christopher Matthews and Ms. Southern Il Pride Shelly Smith. We hope that many businesses and organizations along the path will support by decorating their storefronts.
We encourage that participants remain in their cars, practice social distancing, and WEAR YOUR MASKS.
We also request submissions of videos and pictures of you in your PRIDE GEAR to feature during the live stream. We will have a submission format available to you SOON!
The drive is being hosted by the Rainbow Cafe LGBT Youth Center and Southern Illinois Pride.
