LGBTQ groups call for removing Trump from office

SPRINGFIELD — LGBTQ organizations are calling for removing Trump from the Oval Office after the riot at the U.S. Capitol this week.

Rea Carey, executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, called Trump “a threat to democracy, the U.S. Constitution, and human life every day he remains in office.”

“The National LGBTQ Task Force and National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund call for the immediate removal of Donald Trump under the 25th Amendment.”

Carey said that even a day was too long for Trump to remain in office.

Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David also called for Trump’s removal.

“The Human Rights Campaign urgently calls for the immediate removal of President Donald Trump from office,” David said. “President Trump bears responsibility for Wednesday’s insurrection at the United States Capitol and the attempted coup of our government in which four people died.”

David said that Trump had knowingly advance false election claims to undermine the election, “a shameful violation of his sworn duty to uphold the Constitution of the United States and an interference with the peaceful transfer of power.”

Cassie Lucchesi, vice president of business for Peoria Proud, said her organization agreed that Trump should be removed from office either through the 25th amendment or impeachment. She also called the insurrection an act of domestic terrorism against U.S. democracy.

“The people involved have made it clear that their goal is to instill fear not only in our community, but the BIPOC community and other marginalized communities as well,” she said. “We believe that this act was committed by a group that is racist, bigoted and xenophobic. What happened [Wednesday] was repulsive and unacceptable. Our organization aims to build community and bring folx together and therefore we must denounce the actions that occurred.”

A coalition of state and national LGBTQ groups issued a statement also calling for his removal.

“As LGBTQ organizations and movement leaders, we call for the immediate and unequivocal removal of Donald Trump as President of the United States via the invoking of the 25th Amendment or by impeachment if necessary. Our nation’s security and the personal security of every American is in grave danger, and we cannot afford to sustain even another day with this destructive and seditious man in the White House.”
