On International Women’s Day, President Joseph Biden signed an Executive Order to Guarantee an Educational Environment Free from Discrimination on the Basis of Sex, Including Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity.

The order directed the Secretary of Education and the Attorney General to review all existing regulations and policies within 100 days to ensure that they comply with Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.

The order explicitly directs the department to evaluate Title IX changes by President Donald Trump’s Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, who dismantled Obama-era rules on sexual discrimination and harassment in federally funded education programs. She implemented regulations that altered the handling of sexual assault allegations on college campuses, giving schools more latitude in deciding whether to report accusations to the Title IX office.
