Illinois rep Marie Newman to be honored by National Center for Transgender Equality

U.S. Rep. Marie Newman (D-LaGrange) will be awarded the Ally Award by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) at their annual Trans Equality Awards on Wednesday, March 31.

The freshman representative came to national attention when she put a transgender pride flag at her office door during debate on the Equality Act. The move also started a short-lived feud with Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-Georgia), who has been vocal in opposition to the act. Newman has been just as vocal in support of it and has a transgender daughter.

“While many would assume that we are awarding her for this act alone, it is critical for us to honor Rep. Newman’s years-long fight and commitment, as a lawmaker and a parent, of ensuring transgender Americans like her daughter are afforded the same civil rights and protections as every other American in the United States,” NCTE said in a statement.
