Lake County Board member resigns from diversity committee after deadnaming candidate

Lake County Board member Terry Wilke resigned Monday from the board’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee after deadnaming a candidate on the opposing slate, the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights reported on Monday night.

Wilke was condemned by fellow candidates and board members for referring to Kristal Larson, an out trasngender woman, by her former name.

Larson and a non-partisan slate of candidates are running for Avon Township trustees. Wilke is an incumbent in the township running for re-election.

Larson has been endorsed by the LGBTQ Victory Fund in her race.

Wilke, according to the newspaper, said he was resigning “in light of recent events and as an act of contrition.” The full board will vote on the resignation April 13. He has also offered to pay for diversity training for the diversity committee.

Wilke’s slate of candidates for Avon Township apologized for his comments, according to the Herald.
