The Rainbow Cafe LGBTQ Youth Center in Carbondale will be holding the annual Pride Prom virtually on Saturday, May 29.
From the Facebook event page:
COVID-19 has prevented Pride Prom in most communities, as well as proms in general, throughout 2020. Yet Pride Prom is important to many people, as it gives them the opportunity and event to formally dress up in an affirming way and have same-sex partners, without fear of bullying. That’s why we’re hosting a VIRTUAL PRIDE PROM via our Discord server!
SAVE THE DATE!
Rainbow Cafe’s Pride Prom is going to be on Saturday, May 29th, 2021 from 6 pm to 12 am, including after-prom activities. Additionally, it’s going to be FREE and ALL AGES, and accessible to everyone with discord.
While it may feel silly to dress up for a virtual event, a lot of queer and trans people haven’t had a good reason to dress up in an affirming way in over a year, and this can provide that opportunity – so dress up! We’ll even have a prize for best dressed of the evening!
We will also be having PRIDE PROM ROYALTY for a Pride Prom King, Queen, and In-Between for anyone 25 and under. Winners will receive bragging rights, special discord roles, and fancy sparkly crowns.
If you plan to run, you’ll need to decide which of the three categories you want to be in, and nominate yourself between 12 AM on Saturday, May 1st to 11:59 PM on Saturday, May 22nd.
Voting will be open to everyone in our public discord server from May 23rd to 12 pm on Friday, May 28th. Votes will be counted as quickly as possible and results will be formally announced to everyone at the beginning of pride prom. Are you 25 years old or younger, and want to nominate yourself for Pride Prom Royalty? Nominations are currently OPEN until May 22nd, fill out this form here to nominate yourself: https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSfeiGJSaii…/viewform…
Throughout the night, we’ll be having games through Jackbox, music, and a streamed drag show performance!
After the main event, we’ll be streaming The Prom (2020), which is a musical comedy surrounding a girl wanting to take another girl to prom in a small, conservative town in Indiana.
