Phoenix Center preps for PrideFest with rainbow sidewalk

The Phoenix Center is setting the tone for this weekend’s PrideFest with a colorful sidewalk.

The sidewalk in front of the center on Springfield’s Lawrence Avenue has been painted in rainbow colors. Phoenix Center Executive Director Jonna Cooley said it was for Springfield PrideFest starting on Saturday.

Springfield PrideFest 2021 has been scheduled virtually for May 15, 2021 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “Home Grown Pride” to celebrate the strength and resilience of the local Springfield community.

The virtual event will feature live drag performances, celebrity cameos, activities for kids, and performances by Thornhill, a Springfield local band. Prizes will include cash and baskets of items produced by local Springfield businesses.

The festival was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. The event typically draws more than 20,000 attendees from throughout the state and features vendors, live entertainment, and a parade, as well as activities for kids and teenagers.
