Mount Carmel holding first Pride event

Mount Carmel, on the Wabash River with the border of Indiana, is joining the growing list of Illinois communities holding Pride.

MTC Pride, organized by the Mt. Carmel Rally for Justice, will be at the city’s Merchants Park on Saturday, June 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. The town joins a very small group as most Illinois Pride events are in Central and Northern Illinois.

Michael Stinson, one of the organizers, said they are hoping 50-100 people will show up to the block party-style event.

“We are really excited to be hosting a Pride event in Mt. Carmel this year,” he said. “As far as I can tell, this will be the first pro-LGBTQ event in our community.”

The party will have a bounce house, photo booth, tie dye station, an open mic, a Pride jukebox, information tables with more to be announced as the date approaches. There will be an after party at Vick’s Bread and Brew.

Mt. Carmel Rally for Justice was founded last year after the murder of George Floyd last year. They hold monthly meeting, special events and maintain a Facebook discussion group.
