Southern Illinois takes Pride on a road trip

The Southern Illinois’ LGBTQ community took to the road to celebrate Pride this past weekend.

More than 80 cars took part in the Pride Care-avan from Mt. Vernon to Carbondale, one of several celebrations over the weekend.

Tara Bell of the Rainbow Café LGBTQ Youth Center said that 82 cars participated with at least 100 watching. The congregations of First Presbyterian and First Christian Church also set up welcoming centers on their lawns.

The caravan went through the cities of Mt. Vernon, Harrisburg, West Frankfort, Johnston City, Murphysboro, Pinckneyville, DuQuoin, Marion, Makanda, and Carbondale.

The caravan’s arrival in Carbondale, where participants drove round the Strip, was livestreamed by The Varsity Center.

Along we The Varsity Center, the event was co-sponsored by Southern Illinois Pride Fest, Gaia House and the Rainbow Café.
