Chicago Pride Parade cancelled for 2021
PrideChicago announced the the cancellation of the 2021 Pride Parade on Wednesday, Sept. 1.
The announcement was made in a letter sent to Chicago-area media.
Tim Frye, the 2021 parade coordinator, said that PrideChicago had hoped it would be safe to have such a large event in October, expecting broad vaccination and general reopening after the pandemic. That has not happened.
“To use the words of a song from the 60’s: “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”; we really wanted and hoped that there could be a parade in 2021,” said Frye. “We don’t feel, though, that we can do it safely for everyone in the parade and the people watching. We must cancel the parade for the second year.”
The 2022 Chicago Pride Parade has been scheduled for June 26, 2022.
The Chicago event is the latest Pride and LGBTQ celebration to be cancelled for 2021. Evansville, Ind., cancelled their in-person Pride just last week. Other events such as International Mr. Leather and Milwaukee Pride Fest have also been cancelled over the past year.
