Out state rep Greg Harris to retire at end of term

State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) announced on Monday that he is not running for re-election.

Harris is the Illinois House Majority Leader, one of the highest ranking out LGBTQ state legislators in the country.

Harris became the representative for the 13th district in 2007 after the death of Larry McKeon. McKeon was the first out LGBTQ state representative in Illinois.

During his tenure, Harris has sponsored numerous LGBTQ bills that were signed into law, including:

  • Marriage equality
  • Civil unions
  • Birth certificate modernization

He has also sponsored legislation that preventa consumer reporting agencies from imposing a fee for credit freezes and legislation reforming anti-consumer practices in prescription drug pricing.

“I’m making this announcement now so people considering running for office have time to think and prepare. There is much more to accomplish and we have a young, diverse group of leaders who are ready to take the reins and lead. It’s time to give them the opportunity to do so,” Harris said in a press release.
