Anti-LGBTQ rep Miller running against Davis in GOP primary

U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Oakland) is running against Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) for the redrawn 15th district.

U.S. Rep. Mary Miller (R-Oakland) is running against U.S. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville) in the 2022 GOP primary for the new 15th district.

Miller had represented the 15th district before the recent redistricting. Redistricting moved Davis from the 13th district to the 15th and eliminated Miller’s seat since Illinois also lost a representative after the 2020 census.

Miller is the newest GOP representative from Illinois and has been vocal in her anti-LGBQ views. She sponsored the Safety and Opportunity for Girls Act that would require Title IX to define gender as “biological sex” instead of gender identity. She has also hosted fellow anti-LGBTQ representative Marjorie Taylor Greene at a fundraiser where Greene attacked the transgender daughter of Illinois representative Marie Newman (D-La Grange). She also shared a transphobic story from the Daily Wire and sent a letter to U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona that stated allowing “biological males to use female bathrooms” put children at risk of sexual assault.

However, her biggest attention came just before the insurrection where she said “Hitler was right about one thing” during a speech. She apologized but still says her words were twisted.

Davis, while a strong conservative who has been vocally anti-abortion, is not nearly as far right. He has been largely silent on LGBTQ issues. And unlike Miller, he voted to certify the 2020 presidential election results and to award metals to Capitol Police defending the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The redistricting does put Miller’s residence outside of the new 15th district’s boundaries, but representatives aren’t required to live in the district they represent.

Miller’s campaign has been highlighting an endorsement from former president Donald Trump for the 15th district. Miller has also been one of the most reliable Trump supporters in Congress.

The Davis campaign blasted Miller’s announcement, highlighting that she doesn’t live in the district and is an outsider to Southern Illinois (Miller was born in Naperville in the Chicago metropolitan region.)

“Even worse, Miller supports the Never Trump ticket for Illinois Governor and refused to vote against Nancy Pelosi’s sham, partisan 1/6 Select Committee,” said campaign spokesperson Aaron DeGroot. “All Mary Miller has to show for her time in Congress is quoting Hitler and voting with Democrats like AOC and the far left squad to defund our military and block a pay raise for our troops. That’s shameful. It’s clear that Mary Miller is all talk, no action.”

Davis had been set to be on the select committee until House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled GOP members from the committee after Democrats objected to representatives Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) who have said that the 2020 election was not legitimate.

Davis was also a state co-chair for Trump’s re-election campaign and voted with Trump 90% of the time.
