Geneva Pride has taken over the management and name of Fox Valley Pride’s Facebook group.
Terri Helfers, a founding member of Geneva Pride, said that it was both a merger and name change.
“As Geneva Pride, we quickly realized that our reach was much farther than just the town of Geneva,” she said. “We brainstormed names, and found the Fox Valley Pride organization.”
Founders of Fox Valley Pride had moved on other endevours and handed management of the group name to Geneva Pride. A founding member of Fox Valley Pride is also an administrator in the newly merged group.
The update group has started planning activities for the upcoming year.
“We are starting with an LGBTQ+ Teen Queer Prom at the end of this month,” Helfers said. “We are hoping to have more than 100 local teens attend.”
Members will also take part in Geneva raising the Pride flag and declaring June Pride Month in town. The first weekend of the month, they’ll be working with Geneva High Schools Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) to present a panel of LGBTQ teens sharing their experiences.
“Last year, we kicked off Pride with a Family Pride in the Park event, with crafts, demonstrations, drag queen story time, and dancing.,” she said. “We are currently planning the 2nd annual Family Pride in the Park.”
End of the month plans include events co-hosted with the recently opened Geneva Center for the Arts.
“Our goal is to provide welcoming, affirming spaces for youth and families in the Fox Valley area,” Helfers said. “We’re thrilled about the successes we saw last year (and at our LGBTQ Teen Halloween event), and hope to continue offering safe events in the Fox Valley area.”
