The Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade in a 5-4 decision on Friday, June 24.

Voting for the majority were justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett were all appointed by Trump. The case is Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

The Associated Press reported that Thomas also  called on the court to overturn other high court rulings protecting same-sex marriage, gay sex and the use of contraceptives in his opinion.

Illinois’ neighboring states of Kentucky and Missouri have trigger laws that banned abortion in case Roe was overturned. Both banned abortion within hours of the announcement. Abortions have also stopped in Wisconsin.

Illinois has some of the fewest restrictions on abortion access in the country. It will remain legal in the state.

However, Illinois organizations and leaders have denounced the SCOTUS decision, promising to maintain access in Illinois and fight for national access.

“This Supreme Court this morning recklessly stripped the constitutional right to abortion recognized in Roe v. Wade from millions of people in this country,” said Ameri Klafeta, director of the Women’s and Reproductive Rights Project at the ACLU of Illinois. “People in nearly half of the states across the country are likely to lose the right to make fundamental decisions over their own body very soon. This is cruel and will disproportionately impact people of color and those economically disadvantaged.”

“The Dobbs decision is not only about the denial of abortion and reproductive healthcare, but about the denial of bodily autonomy,” said Equality Illinois Deputy Director Mony Ruiz-Velasco. ” This decision presents a huge threat to LGBTQ+ people not only because of reproductive healthcare, but because the basis of this protection that was undermined/undone by the Court today is the same that protects LGBTQ+ people against criminalization based on our sexual orientation and our right to marry the person we love.”

“Planned Parenthood Illinois Action is outraged the Supreme Court has discarded 50 years of precedent and stripped away the constitutional right to abortion, robbing people of their power to control their bodies, their lives, and their futures for generations to come. It is shameful that the Court is ignoring the majority of people in this country who believe that abortion should remain safe and legal,” said Jennifer Welch, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood Illinois Action.

Planned Parenthood Illinois Action said they expect an increase of 20,000 to 30,000 out of state patients.

Rallies in support of abortion access are planned across Illinois at around 5 p.m.
