The Illinois Family Institute (IFI) is taking aim at a reproductive health clinic set to open in a few months.
The Rockford Family Planning Center would also offer genealogical care, birth control and sexually transmitted disease treatment.
“Our doctors are fabulous, top of the line,” Rockford Family Planning Foundation President Jeanne Bissell said to Rockford TV station WIFR. “I would say 95% of the counties in the United States will not have safe and legal abortion, and women will die.”
The IFI published contact information for Rockford Ald. Frank Beach, who represents the clinic location in the Rockford city council. Beach, a Republican, hasn’t made public comments on his stance on abortion, but he did host a meeting with local businesses who were worried about anti-choice protests in July. The business owners were worried graphic signs held by the protesters would hurt business.
The IFI is calling on people to contact his office and ask him to ask for a zoning change that would, allegedly, bar clinics that offer abortion services from the city.
The group is an affiliate of the American Family Association (AFA) and connected to far-right legal groups Liberty Counsel and Alliance Defending Freedom. All three of those groups have been designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
To contact Ald. Beach, you can call his office at 815-399-3737 or email [email protected].
