The Illinois Eagle is looking for local freelance correspondents to cover the LGBTQ and social justice communities of Central Illinois.

The Eagle is looking for writers in these cities:

  • Springfield
  • Champaign/Urbana
  • Decatur
  • Bloomington/Normal
  • Peoria

Applicants outside of these cities are welcome. Please keep in mind we are focused on covering the community outside of Chicago.

Freelancers would be paid $50 per story with an expected minimum of three stories per month. Stories will be assigned, but writers will be expected to keep an eye out for possible story ideas. These ideas do not have to be specific to their city but should have a focus on LGBTQ issues and/or social justice within Illinois.

Freelancers would also be welcome to submit briefs, known at the Eagle as “Eaglets,” for publication. They would be paid $10 for every five briefs published.

Students are welcome to apply and to use the position to meet internship requirements. People of color and other marginalized communities are encouraged to apply.

The Illinois Eagle is an online LGBTQ newspaper focused on Central Illinois and covering all of Illinois. It works to be a forum, voice and mirror for the LGBTQ and social justice communities of Illinois outside of Chicago. Its political stances are progressive, pro-trans, pro-BLM, pro-union and pro-choice.
