Anti-LGBTQ group Awake Illinois is hosting a “Coalition for Kids” panel at the Des Plaines Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 8.

The event is being co-sponsored by a list of right-wing organizations including the Log Cabin Republicans of Chicago, Turning Point USA, No Left Turn in Education and others.

Their event listing says the panel is a “diverse group of advocates gather together to transform the conversation on issues affecting children.” The groups taking part all have a history of taking aim at policies or events supporting LGBTQ youth.

Among the speakers and panelists in their promotional material include Jaimee Michell of Gays Against Groomers, former GOP Lt. Gov. candidate Stephanie Trussell, Parents Involved in Education Illinois President Terry Newsome and Awake Illinois leader Shannon Adcock.

Awake Illinois has become notorious for their anti-LGBTQ activities in the Chicago metro area, especially in DuPage County. They were among the loudest voices against a drag brunch at a Lake in the Hills bakery and a drag bingo at the Downers Grove Public Library.

They have also been running school board candidate training sessions that have been the focus of protests and threatened to sue those criticizing them.

In October 2022, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) revealed that the “grassroots: Awake was getting its money from Republican megadonor Richard Uihlein.

Tickets are $5 each and the doors open at the Des Plaines Theatre at 5:30 p.m.
