Counterprotests are being organized for an Awake Illinois panel discussion being held in Des Plaines next month.
BG Pride from nearby Buffalo Grove and Speak Des Plaines will be protesting the “Coalition for Kids” panel at the Des Plaines Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
The event is being co-sponsored by a list of right-wing organizations including the Log Cabin Republicans of Chicago, Turning Point USA, No Left Turn in Education and others.
Their event listing says the panel is a “diverse group of advocates gather together to transform the conversation on issues affecting children.” The groups taking part all have a history of taking aim at policies or events supporting LGBTQ youth.
Carolyn Pinta of BG Pride said the group is in touch with Des Plaines police to make sure the counterprotest is safe.
