Equality Illinois puts out call for action on HB 1286

Equality Illinois is calling on Illinois residents to contact legislators to support HB 1286, which allows for multiple-occupancy gender-neutral restrooms.

“[I]t just creates the opportunity for places, businesses, universities, you name it, to create a multi-stall gender-neutral restroom, if they so choose,” said bill sponsor State Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville). “And it lays out requirements for what is in that facility.”

Stuart had to cancel an event because of misinformation and threats over the bill.

HB1286 would expand the Equitable Restrooms Act to allow businesses to designate restrooms as gender-neutral provided that they have specified signage, stall dividers, and partitions for urinals.

“Anti-equality, anti-family organizations have launched a vile and deliberate campaign of disinformation against this bill,” said Equality Illinois Public Policy Director Mike Ziri in an announcement.

“The bill does not create a requirement,” he added. “It leaves decisions to adopt up to business and building owners as they determine how best to serve their communities and customers. For those businesses that adopt the restrooms, the bill establishes basic requirements to ensure safety, privacy, and inclusion.” The City of Chicago already adopted similar provisions in 2021.”

Illinois residents can contact their legislators through this link. It will take less than a minute through the link.
