DANVILLE – This city on the Indiana border will celebrate its first Pride celebration on Saturday, June 3.
Two people, Lacy Miller and Bonnie Marrow, had helped put on a small Pride event in Rossville last year. They wanted to do it again, but in Danville. With a Facebook group and meeting on April 10, Miller, Caylynne Dobbles, Marrow, Gaige Miller, Kim Crouch, and Robert Sloan became the start of the VC (Vermillion County) Pride Coalition.
“We didn’t want Pride to just be a once-a-year event in Vermilion County, we want to make actual change in Vermilion County,” the organizers said.
There’s been no problems in organizing the event. Businesses in downtown Danville have been receptive and have asked how to be involved. The owners of Sarges Tap even waived the rental cost for the official after party.
“We did a silent auction to raise funds and the generosity of businesses across the county was amazing,” the organizers said in an email.
Pride starts with a Pet Parade at 1:30 p.m. DJ Silkee will be performing from 1:30-4:30.
There will be an arts and crafts table for kids that will include some face painters for some free fun, and there will be community resources like WIC, the Survivor Resource Center, and Crosspoint Human Services available. Companies like Goodwill and FedEx will also be present for those looking for employment.
Some downtown businesses will also be running specials or participating in their own ways. SarahLees Healing Mountain Crystals will have a photo booth set up and Obsidian Coffee will be the adult-only speakeasy for people who may need a break but still want to enjoy the festivities. Dis-N-Dat will be offering 25% off all her wigs.
“There will really be something for everyone at this event,” the organizers said.
