Poem: What is Queerness?

What is Queerness?
To me Queerness is freedom

Freedom to be my true authentic self Unapologetic for how I was made How I was meant to be

Freedom to fight against the snares of toxic masculinity and toxic femininity, to be my own Enby

Freedom from draconian gender norms and preposterous expectations to conform

Freedom to love who I choose and how I choose

But that freedom, as with all freedoms, comes at a price.

A desperate need to learn from the abuse we’ve endured, to break free of its vicious cycle.

Internalized Queerphobias, indoctrinated and beaten into us since youth

The dark loneliness of the closet, the suffering of conversions, the cruelty of peers, the demonization and persecution of our very existence.

The longing for acceptance and safety in our home and society

The blood of parents, children, siblings, niblings, and unties who protested for our rights before us

Yet we persevere!
Through raids and riots
Copped bricks and bricked cops
Sodomy and Drag laws
Bans and legislation

And still we stand together
PROUDLY QUEER AS EVER
AND WE WILL NOT GO BACK IN THE CLOSET
