KANE COUNTY – Local LGBTQ group Belong: Fox Valley has received 501(c)3 status.
The status means donations to the group are now tax deductible. Belong works on creating inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ community in the Fox Valley and surrounding areas.
“Our group was created with a passion to create safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ folx and their allies to gather and create community,” Belong Co-Chair Caleb Anderson said. “Some of our larger passion projects such as the youth drop-in center are simply not able to happen without the status.”
The whole process took about nine months.
Anderson said that has been a challenge for LGBTQ people to find support in the Chicago suburbs. The organization was founded to change that. The new tax status will create new opportunities to expand those spaces.
“For myself personally, there were times in my life that I did not have the support of my family and living in the suburbs made it challenging to find community,” he said. “I became involved because I don’t want anyone else to have to go through it alone and help bring people together.”
