Northern Illinois University ranked as most LGBTQ-friendly in state

The school was chosen based on academics, affordability and inclusivity.

DEKALB – Northern Illinois University (NIU) has been ranked as the most LGBTQ-friendly school in Illinois by BestColleges and Campus Pride.

Along with a school’s Campus Pride score, BestColleges also looked at academic quality and affordability.

NIU came out ahead of other LGBTQ-friendly schools in the state such as Illinois State University, University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and Southern Illinois University.

“In a state like Illinois, with institutions that do value inclusion, we don’t take lightly the fact that what we’re doing brought us to that level of being the best,” said Molly Holmes, the director for the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) in a statement. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that we rose to the top because we all work very hard, and we do take this level of support very seriously. We take this recognition as motivation to keep going and continue to build upon our efforts, as we know there is always room to grow.”

The GSRC was one of the programs highlighted by BestColleges as well as the LGBTQ+ Speakers Bureau

Campus Pride ranked NIU with five out of five stars for inclusivity.
