CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) appointed Precious Brady-Davis to serve as the next Commissioner at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) on Wednesday.
Brady-Davis is the first out Black trans woman to be appointed to any political office in Cook County and only the second Black trans woman in public office in Illinois.
She currently serves as associate communications director at Sierra Club in Chicago.
Equality Illinois welcomed the appointment, saying that Brady-Davis would be a “powerful voice for change.”
“At a time when entities are attempting to roll back civil rights and erase Trans people from existing, Equality Illinois celebrates today’s historic appointment and looks forward to working with Commissioner Precious Brady-Davis,” said Equality Illinois CEO Brian Johnson.
The MWRD manages wastewater reclamation and flood abatement for the Chicago metropolitan area.
Brady-Davis was appointed to fill the vacancy created by Kim Du Buclet’s appointment to the Illinois General Assembly.
“I’m honored to join the board and serve the nearly 13 million people who access MWRD services every day,” said Brady-Davis in a statement from the governor’s office. “MWRD has a responsibility to lead in environmental problem-solving while protecting the most vulnerable members of the Chicagoland region. These are both missions I have worked for throughout my life, and I look forward to continuing that work with MWRD.”
