Spurlock Book Club: Angels in America, Part 2: Perestroika
January 18, 2022 @ 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm
The Spurlock Book Club will be hosting two evenings of discussions of the play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, by Tony Kushner. One of the most honored plays of all time, Angels in America premiered on Broadway in 1993, winning a Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as a Tony Award for Best Play. In 2018, a Broadway Revival, directed by Marianne Elliot, which began at the National Theatre London, was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, the most ever received for a nonmusical play.ā
Angels in America is the finest drama of our time, speaking to us of an entire era of life and death as no other play within memory. It ranks as nothing less than one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century.ā – John Heilpern, New York Observer
The play is set during the AIDS crisis, in the mid-1980s. The characters grapple with sickness, death, a pandemic, a divided America, love, sex, heaven, and hellāthemes that still find resonance today, especially as we deal with a new global pandemic.
These book club events are hosted in conjunction with the Spurlock Museumās current exhibit Sewn in Memory: AIDS Quilt Panels from Central Illinois.
