Phoenix Center presents LGBT Training on Sept. 20

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center will be hosting training sessions on working with the LGBTQ community on Friday, Sept. 20. From the Facebook event:
This training is for people working in direct service jobs who want to better understand LGBTQ terminology and culture. Topics included: LGBT specific terminology, understanding what it means to be transgender and the process of transitioning, implicit bias and microaggressions, medical disparities, and what you can do to create a welcoming environment. This training is 4 CEUs for social workers, therapists, counselors, psychologists, nurses, and teachers.

Phoenix Center Chix with Stix Golf Outing on Aug. 3

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center in Springfield will be hosting its annual Chix with Stix fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Lincoln Greens Golf Course. From the Facebook event:
Join us for the 5th Annual Chix with Stix Women’s Only Golf Outing. This year’s event will be held at Lincoln Greens, an 18 hole course. This is a “best ball foursome” event with prizes for longest putt, longest drive, and closest to the pin.

Phoenix Center Yard Sale on April 26

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center is holding a yard sale fundraiser on April 26. From the Facebook event:
Phoenix Center residents and staff are having a yard sale. We are taking donations from March 15-April 15. Items will be sorted and cleaned and organized for the sale. Items accepted include household goods, furniture, books, tools, etc.

Phoenix Center presents Club LaCage, April 13

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center in Springfield will be hosting their annual LaCage Drag Show on April 13 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts. From the Facebook event:
Don’t miss the 8th Annual Club LaCage Drag Show. This show sells out every year! Enjoy performances with an 80’s theme from local drag performers and good times with friends. This show will be in Theatre III at the Hoogland Center for the Arts.

Phoenix Center hires new staff member

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center announced a new hire this week on their Facebook page. Sara Bown will be working on the center’s new grant to expand HIV/HCV testing and harm reduction to rural areas. Sara did her internship with the Phoenix Center last year. She has a Master’s in Public Health and is working on her PhD.

Phoenix Center hosting LGBT Film Series starting in March

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center is hosting a film series with the University of Illinois-Springfield Performing Arts Center this spring. For March:
The first is Boy Erased starring Nicole Kidman & Russel Crowe as parents of a young gay man. Due to their religious beliefs they force him to go to conversion therapy. While the movie was released nationally on Nov. 2, 2018 it was never shown in Springfield.

RENT ticket fundraiser for Phoenix Center in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Thanks to the generosity of the University of Illinois-Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, the Phoenix Center is selling tickets to the January 30 performance of “Rent.” From the Facebook event:
UIS Performing Art Services / Sangamon Auditorium has offered The Phoenix Center a block of 56 amazing mezzanine seats for the 20th Anniversary performance of RENT. The tickets are $69 each and 10% of each ticket sold will go to The Phoenix Center but you have to purchase your ticket through the Center. You can submit a check, call the Phoenix Center office with a credit card or pay via the Phoenix Center website “donate” button. If you pay via the website you will need to call Jonna and let her know so she can reserve your seats (217-528-5253).

Phoenix Center Ugly Holiday Sweater Party

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield’s Phoenix Center will be hosting an “ugly holiday sweater” party fundraiser at the Magic Kitchen on Monday, Dec. 10. From the Facebook event:
Each year we assemble a group of the most hideous holiday sweaters imaginable! The person with the most votes wins the “Ugliest Holiday Sweater” title. Also, bring a “LGBT themed” white elephant gift (max $20).

Phoenix Center to hold Transgender 101 class

SPRINGFIELD — The Phoenix Center, the LGBTQ community center for central Illinois, will  hold a Transgender 101 class series for those wanting to be supportive of transgender friends and family. From the Facebook event:
This class has been created for all of those people who call and want to learn more about being transgender. They might have a family member, a co-worker, a neighbor or friend who identifies as transgender and they want to better be able to support and be an ally. The training will include terminology, a discussion of social and medical transitioning, and ideas of what you can do to make your environment (home, work, school, business) more LGBT inclusive.
